Character Series: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (or Seima no Kouseki)
Age: 17-19ish? (I don’t think the game says, but judging by his composure and the average ages of other FE heroes . . . )
Background:
Innes is the Prince of Frelia, during a time when Magvel has gone into a period of war. He has a little sister, a Pegasi rider named Tana, who he is extremely protective of and often speaks harshly to in order to try and dispel her from joining the army. He has always taken both his role as a brother and a prince extremely seriously. There was an incident where Tana lost the crown inside the castle, and their father (King Hayden) grew extremely angry, but Innes searched the entire castle to produce the crown and dissipated the situation by explaining he only wanted to see how it fit on his head, since he would be the future ruler. However, when he was only a boy, he would often lose to Ephraim of Renais, the prince of the attacked country. Upon their first meeting, Innes brashly challenged Ephraim to an archer competition (Innes won), then spears, then jousting, taking away Ephraim’s attention from his little sister. His frustration of losing to Ephraim to these matches may have lead to his ultimate decision to become an archer because of his instilled need to be the best. However, it is also shown that he is mostly level-headed with a deep love for his country, especially about Frelia’s seafood. He sometimes watches the Pegasi gather in Walles Forest, and thinks upon them as beautiful. He also deeply respected the warriors of Frelia’s army. Vanessa, a particular Pegasus knight, especially admired him, and he did not refute her but instead acknowledged her ability as a warrior.
Innes rode out into battle with his men to defend Frelia. Though the country of Renais had fallen, Innes fiercely defended Frelia from Grado. He returned to the castle to see Ephraim and Eirika. He greets them coldly and passes harsh blame upon them for letting Renais falls before leaving. But he displays his skills as both a prince and a skilled tactician by agreeing to ally with them, and then rode off to go through Carcino to warn Jehenna and ally with Jehenna’s Queen for a united front against Grado. Though he is attacked along the way, he uses a Pegasi knight to try and send word to get help. It might be noted that Innes always had a deep, extensive spy network throughout his country that was extremely renowned. Throughout the game, he refers to his spies, and was rumored to ruthlessly dig out any spies within his own country. Much of the information gained from the game is given by Innes.
Though he is trapped in Carcino, he still harshly demands that his mercenaries leave, and insults them continuously. Luckily, the mercenary sees through the act and after accusing him of royal martyrdom, continues to fight with him before Eirika and her group comes to give aide. Innes is ruthless once he finds out about the betrayal of Carcino, but their group continues to surge towards Jehenna. They discover more and more about the Sacred Stones, especially about how it was once used to seal the Demon King. Grado is slowly destroying the Sacred Stones, and, in the process, releasing zombies and monsters of all sorts that they encounter along the way. Innes displays impatience at those who foolishly tried to run ahead, while calmly taking intiative on his own. They do eventually reach Jehenna, only to find the queen dying before the castle burns. Innes urges retreat even against Eirika’s refusals.
The second-to-last Sacred Stone remained in Rausten, where they headed with haste. Eirika discovers that it was actually her and Ephraim’s childhood friend, Lyon, who was behind the situation, but Innes condemns Lyon quickly. In the final battle, they finally meet Lyon who, after proclaiming his love for Eirika, then dies. The Demon King is released and after defeating him, they headed back to their respective countries, but with promises of friendship to lay between them still.
Ironically, he is served by many loyal vassals when he returns to his country.
Personality:
Innes demands to be the best. Raised as a prince, he was instilled with a necessity to always perform perfection, as seen by his rescue in Carcino where he later apologizes to the mercenaries, explaining that he was required to keep the perfect image for his people. In doing so, however, he comes off to being extremely arrogant (which is not altogether untrue.) In his support with Eirika, despite his own danger, he would rather stay in front of her (instead of behind, since he was an archer) so as to give the right impression. His pride can often be his folly, seen in Joshua’s support where, though he discovers Joshua had cheated, still demands to continue to bet on the coin flip. His constant losses to Ephraim in areas like swordsmanship and lancemanship created a deep, harsh grudge within him against Ephraim, that remained uncleared until the very end of the game. Even if he confesses his love to Eirika in their support, he still demands to fight with Ephraim first, in yet another contest. He resents Ephraim deeply for his many losses, though he himself is acclaimed in the area of archery now. Yet at the same time, Frelia is highly regarded because of him. Though he condemns the mercenaries as being ‘dirty sellswords,’ he still fights alongside of them, and acknowledges his own warriors as well. He is not necessarily self-sacrificing, since he proclaims himself as a precious life by being the prince of such a great country, but he is willing to give up his own life for the sellswords. He is also an extremely talented archer, shown by an incident when he was a child where he aimed and hit targets that even a professional archer could not hit. Yet his arrogance and love for his country often work together for the best, to develop within him a never-die, always-continue mindset, shown by his death quote, “I won't give up... Not here... Not in this place... I'll keep going, even if I have to crawl...” He mentions the fact that he is willing to crawl, which he considers a horrible subjectiveness, since he is not the type to grovel or beg, in order to win this battle. His priorities are straight and forward. Even in the final battle of the Demon King, he says scornfully that he was in no way inferior to this dark power.
That incident also displayed Innes’s quick mindset. He is ruthless and brash, but never hasty. He logically thinks through his plans and understands that any information at all can lead to great importance, and handles his spy networks delicately yet ruthlessly for any enemy spies who may have wandered in. He is a strategician. He also has extreme pride in his country, and his bloodline is everything to him. He continuously refers to his country throughout the game with a great sense of pride. It can also be shown that he prides himself by his way of dress, which is a highly fashionable and refined manner. In his support with Gerik, he promises to make Frelia the strongest and best country of Magvel, of wealth and power. For his country, he would even sacrifice a bit of his arrogance and thank both his father and Gerik for teaching him that the strength and courage of someone who he had previously thought of as a ‘mere mercenary.’
But this arrogance also leads him to be extremely anti-social. His first reaction of seeing Ephraim and Eirika, Ephraim thought dead, Eirika who he hadn’t seen for the longest time, was scorn. He even treats his little sister, Tana, with harshness, unable to simply say that he loved her too much and did not want to lose her on the battlefield. Instead, he insults her ability and accuses her of constantly getting in the way, leading her to get upset and think that her brother no longer loved her. To try and get the mercenaries to flee, he displays both his inner arrogance (thinking that the mercenaries were only staying for the money, so he fires them) and his good heart (though his wording was tricky, he was actually giving them the opportunity to flee).
nnes does have a good heart. His uppity appearance and personality may reflect harshly upon him, but he not only loves his country, but also his friends. He dislikes people getting killed, and a slight self-sacrificing stint appears repeatedly when he demands to be placed in front of Eirika despite his archer profession and trying to lead the mercenaries to abandon him. His cleverness with words that makes him so valuable against the enemy is also what makes him so difficult to interpret to show his true feelings. But his soldiers are surprisingly steadfast to him, and would stay with him to death. In their final support of his dismissal of Tana, his little sister, Innes tells her that he is still her brother, displaying his deep love (and his logical mindset when he adds that he would be there with her when she apologizes to their father for running away).
His affinity is ice.
